President AliyevBaku FTZ: Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev last week signed a decree paving the way for the establishment of a free trade zone around the new Baku International Sea Trade Port. By offering businesses tax-free benefits, the authorities are hoping to attract as much as $1bn in inward investment over the next few years, the port’s Director General Taleh Ziyadov said.
Construction began on the redevelopment of Baku’s port in 2011 and its new ro-ro terminal is due to come into operation later this year, with phase one of the new port being scheduled for completion next year.

Pakistan creates five SEZs along China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Route of China Pakistan Economic CorridorThe federal government of Pakistan has upgraded five industrial estates to special economic zone status as part of its commitment to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. The five industrial estate in question are Multan (Phase 2), Rahim Yar, Bhalwal, Rawalpindi and Dera Ghazi Khan. The decision to upgrade will create more than 150,000 jobs and attract billions of rupees in investment, the Chairman of the Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company SM Tanveer said.

Khorgos Eastern Gate Free Trade Zone KazakhstanChina’s eastern Jiangsu province is close to agreeing to invest $600m in the Khorgos – Eastern Gate SEZ logistics and industrial zone, the Deputy Director Kazakhstan’s state-owned rail company Temir Zholy confirmed this week. 
“Jiangsu Province is our gateway to Southeast Asia,” Abdur-Rashid Sakenov said. “These investments will focus on the primary processing of raw materials …which will then be packed and shipped …to China.” The lion’s share will be destined for export to South-East Asia from Jiangsu’s Lianyungang port.
 Recently hailed as “the new Dubai” by its CEO Karl Gheysen, the development of the 4,000ha multi-modal logistics, large-scale industrial production and trade centre on the Sino-Kazakh border is central to Kazakhstan’s Nurly Zhol (Bright Path) economic policy and is also strategically important for China’s One Belt One Road ambitions to open up the New Silk Road.

Free Port of Vladivostok secures first investors as Zarubino gets the OK

SlavyankaThe Free Port of Vladivostok has attracted its first investors since it secured SEZ status this summer, in the form of a $78.2m 182-room five-star hotel at Slavyanka. Located 170km south of Vladivostok, the hotel will be developed by the Sino-Russian Pacific Ocean Investment Company, a joint venture between Russia’s Transit-DB Holding and two Chinese companies – Zhun Gun Sin and the High Way construction firm. The hotels should be ready to open its doors within two years, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev said today.
Zarubino Port locationHe also confirmed that approval had been given for the joint Sino-Russia $100m expansion of Zarubino port close to the border between the two countries, designed to give shippers better access to and from Northeast Asia.

Iranians invest in Tajik Free Economic Zone: Iranian investors have agreed to commit $8m into two new business in the Free Economic Zone in the town of Danghara, home town of both Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and first Deputy Prime Minister Asadullo Ghulomov. $5m has been earmarked for the construction of a plastic pipe production plant and $3m for a processed and dried fruit factory. There are currently four free economic zones in Tajikistan — at Sughd, Panj, Danghara, and Ishkoshim – which offer investors preferential economic, financial and trading terms and conditions.
