China to build 700km Iran-Pakistan pipeline

Iran to Pakistan pipelineIran-Pakistan pipeline:  China’s state-run oil and gas corporation CNPC is expected to agree plans to build a 700 km pipeline from the Iranian border to the city of Nawabshah in Pakistan’s Sindh province in order to alleviate the country’s long-standing energy shortage. As reported in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, an agreement should officially be signed when China’s President Xi Jinping visits Islamabad next month.
The $2bn project will connect Nawabshah to Iran’s South Pars fields at Assaluyeh by linking up with a 900-km pipeline that Iran says it has already completed. It is estimated that it will take about two years to build and will eventually supply Pakistan with enough gas to generate 4.5TWh of electricity – roughly equivalent to its current shortfall.
