Chinese tourists splash out $194bn

Chinese TouristsEncouraged by a relaxation of visa restrictions and rising disposable income, the number of Chinese tourists travelling abroad each year rose by 20% in 2015 to 120 million; and, with 59 million heading overseas in first half of 2016, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) is expecting that figure to reach a combined total of 600 million over the next five years.
Last year alone, China’s wanderlust injected an estimated $194bn into the global economy while at home, the 4bn tourist excursion recorded in 2015 generating tourism revenues of over $620bn 
The number of Chinese travelling abroad has now grown 13 times since 1988.
Chinese tourist at OktoberfestIt was the third year in a row that China has topped the list of international outbound travellers, according to the CNTA. Asian destinations continue to be their most favoured destinations while Europe is also growing in popularity.
According to the China Tourism Research Institute, the top ten most popular overseas destinations for Chinese tourists are:

  1. South Korea
  2. Taiwan
  3. Japan
  4. Hong Kong
  5. Thailand
  6. France
  7. Italy
  8. Switzerland
  9. Macau
  10. Germany
