Under the watchful eye of President Vladimir Putin who gave the project his blessing via a live video link, the first tanker due to transport oil from the Arctic Gate terminal on the Yamal peninsula in north-west Siberia began loading its cargo this week. Once fully operational, the Vorota Arktiki terminal will have the capacity to transfer more than 8.5m tons of crude oil from the Novoportovskove field into tankers, despite extreme weather conditions and temperatures as low as -50°. Developing the field has required an investment of $3bn over the past three years.
