The Greek-Eurasian Business Council got off to a combative start yesterday, with its first president Dr. Spyros Kouvelis announcing that the centre of economic gravity was shifting eastwards whether the West liked it or not – and that Greece was taking note. “We’re taking steps towards the expansion of our cooperative ties with the Eurasian Economic Union,” he said, adding that unless Greece took account of the persistently growing role of the region in the world economy it might lose a big part of an mportant market.
He also used his new platform to criticise the EU’s sanctions policy. “Economic issues cannot be resolved with the aid of sanctions and we don’t agree with their imposition, all the more so since these sanctions [the EU sanctions against Russia over the turmoil in Ukraine] have created serious problems for many manufacturers in Greece,” he said.
Members of the council’s first trip will be to Astana where the EXPO international exhibition is due to be help in 2017.
