Russia bans Polish cheese imports: Russia’s consumer protection watchdog Rospotrebnadzor has announced that it has suspended cheese imports from Poland, claiming that a variety of processed cheese made by Poland’s Ostrowia producers failed to meet Russia’s “technical regulations.” ban came into effect on Friday and coincided with the end of the pre-Lent Maslenitsa festival – also known as Cheese-fare Week – which precedes the fast in the run-up to Easter. Poland has been one of Europe’s strongest critics of Russian policies in Ukraine. Among the produce to have been banned by Moscow over the Ukraine crisis are Polish apples, which previously made up 40% of all apples consumed in Russia.
