Irina Yarovaya, head of the Russian Duma’s state security committee, this week called for Auchan and other retail chains to respect both the law and their customers by not offering “fake products and poison.” Her remarks are being seen as the latest salvo in the tit-for-tat between Russia and the EU over the annexation of Crimea and subsequent events in Ukraine following a number of unscheduled inspections of Auchan’s supermarkets by the watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor in and around Moscow last month. Its inspectors accused the French retailer of misleading customers with meat labels showing expiration dates extending beyond legally permissible limits. “It is astounding that Auchan representatives have not asked their customers to forgive them,” Yarovaya said.
