Russia to help Pakistan with North-South pipeline

PIPELINENorth-South pipeline: The Russian government has officially agreed to help Pakistan build a 1,100 km gas pipeline with an annual capacity of 12.4bn m³ Karachi to Lahore to help it with its acute energy shortages. With Western sanctions on Iran now seeming likely to be lifted following the deal thrashed out in Vienna last month, the project – which also provides for the construction of a nember of LNG terminals – will enable Pakistan to access natural gas supplies from its neighbouring Islamic Republic. The LNG will be shipped by sea and the regasified in Karachi. allow Work on the $2bn pipeline which will have an annual capacity of 12.4bnm³, is due to start in 2017 and stipulates “maximum use of technology, materials, equipment and products of Russian production.”
Russia is also expected to bid for some elements of the the $7.6bn Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline that is due to go out to tender later in the year.
